Reading

Reading at Roche

At Roche we feel that reading is the cornerstone to progress in all aspects of learning, we therefore place reading at the heart of the curriculum. We teach reading and comprehension skills systematically but equally emphasise enjoyment and engagement of reading. We link reading to learning in all curriculum areas. We feel that the resultant development of children’s communication skill and vocabulary knowledge are key aspects in deepening children’s cultural capital.

This begins in Foundation stage where a ‘five a-day diet’ of reading is delivered through story, rhyme and song and the systematic teaching of reading takes place through the Read Write Inc scheme for phonics. Children’s reading resources match exactly with the phonics that they are learning. We intend for children to learn to read and develop an enjoyment and engagement with reading that will stay with them. The development and extension of vocabulary is a feature of learning. The school’s context and our assessment of children’s communication on entry highlight the importance of focusing on this aspect.

In key stage 1 Read Write Inc. phonics is continued alongside the accompanying reading texts that match exactly with the sounds that children are learning. At this point we also introduce school’s shared reading strategy. This involves every child with the same high quality text in their hands all reading together with the class teacher. Activities focus on the development of enjoyment and engagement in reading but are also structured around the VIPERS set of questions which teach children the breadth of comprehension skills that they need and focuses heavily on the development of vocabulary. Our evaluation has shown that this is one of the children’s favourite learning activities. By approaching reading in this way we know that all children regardless of their reading experiences outside of school are accessing and enjoying high quality texts that they can fully engage with. Our evaluation has also demonstrated that this approach is effective for all levels of ability within the class and is a fully inclusive learning experience.

As children complete the read Write Inc programme they progress on to a greater amount of independent reading which is structured around the Accelerated Reader scheme. This ensures that children are reading and being challenged to comprehend at the right level. Time for independent reading in school is part of the curriculum ensuring that all children have time to read regardless of their experiences outside of school. We encourage and incentivise progress in reading as assessed by Accelerated Reader and even compete between classes to have the top class average scores. This element of competition has been effective in encouraging boys reading.

Shared reading continues in all classes to the end of key stage 2. Teachers select texts based on a number of factors; the text may compliment the topic focus for the half term, the text may be the teaching and learning focus for the half term or the text may introduce key aspect of vocabulary or grammar that complement the focus in writing or the text may exemplify the genre that matches the writing focus. Shared reading will nearly always provide stimulus and context for the writing learning that is taking place.

Below are our weekly 60 second reads for pupils to complete.

We have recently subscribed to an online reading and quizzing site called MyOn. A parent's guide to MyOn is available on the right, below a link to the MyOn website.
